PASTORAL COUNCIL
I am happy to announce the newly formed Pastoral
Council members. They are as follows: I am still looking for a recording
secretary. The purpose of a pastoral council is to assist the Pastor in
fostering pastoral activity in the parish. Let me quote the relevant Canon Law:
Can. 536.
1. If the diocesan bishop judges it opportune
after he has heard the presbyteral council, a pastoral council is to be
established in each parish, over which the pastor presides and in which the
Christian faithful, together with those who share in pastoral care by virtue of
their office in the parish, assist in fostering pastoral activity.
2. A pastoral council possesses a consultative
vote only and is governed by the norms established by the diocesan bishop.
I am grateful to the members of the council for their
generosity in serving the parish under this capacity.
With Prayers and Blessings,
Fr. Tom
Parish Retreat and Penance Service
Please make yourselves available to attend the
Parish Lenten Retreat preached by Fr. Mathew Vellankal of Fremont, California,
March 22 through March 24, at 7 pm (Mass at 6:30 pm). The Lenten Penance Service
will be on March 25 at 7 pm. Several priests will be available for confessions
that evening.
2010 Lenten Regulations
1. All members of the Christian faithful, in
their own way, are bound to do penance, in virtue of divine law. In order that
all may be joined in a common observance of penance, penitential days such as
the Season of Lent are prescribed during which the Christian faithful in a
special way, pray, perform works of piety and charity, and deny themselves by
fulfilling their responsibilities more faithfully and especially by observing
fast and abstinence according to the norms of the following directives (Canon
1249):
ABSTINENCE
2. All persons who have completed their 14
th
year are bound by the law of abstinence from meat.
3. Complete abstinence is to be observed on Ash
Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday during the Easter Triduum.
4. The faithful will not lightly excuse
themselves from this obligation. On days of complete abstinence, meats and soup
or gravy made from meat are not to be eaten.
FAST
5. All adults are bound by the law of fast up to
the beginning of their sixtieth (60
th) year.
According to Canon 97, #1, a person who has completed the
eighteenth (18th) year is an adult.
6. The day of fast during Lent is Ash Wednesday
(February 17) and Good Friday (April 2).
7. The faithful will not lightly excuse themselves from this
obligation.
